Day 1 – Technical Skills
Learn basic crampon skills with a day of ice climbing. There are only two ways to use your crampons! Willey’s Slide in Crawford Notch is a great destination for this introduction. Also discussed are basic ice ax use and an introduction to ropework.
Day 2 – Winter Camping
Pack up and head up on Mount Washington for the night. Packing and winter camping skills are taught as we go. Often there is time for a walk up into one of the ravines for Snowschool; lessons in self arrest, snow anchors and ropework used in mountaineering.
Day 3 – Mount Washington Ascent
With the crampon techniques taught the first day you will feel solid on your feet negotiating the snow and ice on the flanks of the exposed upper half of Mount Washington. An early breakfast, coffee and off we go for a summit bid. Surface conditions, weather and your physical condition all play a huge part in success, but whatever the outcome you will go home impressed.
