Three Day Mountaineering Course

Three Day Mountaineering Course

A comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of winter mountaineering.  This course works.  Tried and true.

Day 1 – Technical Skills

Things start out with a conversation about the winter toolkit and preparedness in the mountains.  From there we shift gears and head outside to learn self-arrest, crampon skills, ice axe use, and more.  Willey’s Slide in Crawford Notch is a great destination for this introduction.

Day 2 – Winter Camping

Pack up and head out to Mount Washington for the night. Packing and winter camping skills are taught as we go. Often there is time for a walk up into Huntington or Tuckerman Ravine for more snowschool – further lessons in self arrest, snow anchors and ropework used in mountaineering.

Day 3 – Mount Washington Ascent

With the crampon techniques learned on the first day you will feel solid on your feet negotiating the snow and ice on the flanks of the exposed upper half of Mount Washington. An early breakfast, coffee, and off we go for a summit bid. Surface conditions, weather and your physical condition all play a huge part in success, but whatever the outcome you will go home impressed.
